With the trailer for Sony's new Resident Evil Movie, Resident Evil: Retribution still fresh in our minds, Capcom has debuted the trailer for their new Resident Evil game, Resident Evil 6.

I have been a fan of Capcom's Resident Evil series for years now. Especially Resident Evil 4. That game was pretty much the greatest thing in the history of great things when it came out.
The Resident Evil movies? Not so much. I can see, objectively, how I should be able to appreciate them more than I do. From my perspective, they actually have quite a lot to offer: Milla Jovovich in tight outfits, guns, explosions, zombies... Sounds like a recipe for success. Sadly, the movies don't deliver on all of that potential.
What makes the games great is the claustrophobic atmosphere. In their best moments, Resident Evil games can be pretty intense. Dark hallways, rustling noises, being ambushed when you least expect it. Resident Evil 4, volume up, lights out, alone. That is all. Try it sometime. It can be pretty intense, Especially if you haven't played the game before. I had to stop a few times because it was all getting to be a little bit too intense. I LOVE when something can do that to me.
So yeah, the movies are pretty much the exact opposite of that. Lots of running around blowing stuff up, disposable characters that are only there as zombie/monster fodder, and that's pretty much it. To their credit, the movies have at least made an effort recently to try to include some of the actual characters from the series, but if I was really into the movies and I played one of the games for the first time, I'm pretty sure I would be confused. It's not even really the completely different characters and story that bother me. I would forget about all of that if it was able to convey the same feeling. But it doesn't. It just isn't the same thing. At all.
So I guess it's time to start getting stoked. And maybe it's time not to.
